Kim Kardashian Attends The Met Gala In A Marilyn Monroe Gown

The theme of this year's Met Gala is "Gilded Age."

Kim Kardashian wore the iconic sparkly figure-hugging gown worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 to the Met Gala and went gently down the red carpet with boyfriend and comedian Pete Davidson holding her hand, with her blonde hair in a tight bun.

“Well this is Marilyn Monroe’s dress and it is 60 years old and she wore this when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy in 1962,” Kardashian introduced her outfit on the red carpet to Vogue journalist La La Anthony.

In a separate interview to the same publication, the SKIMS founder told Vogue of her look’s influence saying, “The idea really came to me after the gala in September last year.”

“I thought to myself, what would I have done for the American theme if it had not been the Balenciaga look? What’s the most American thing you can think of? And that’s Marilyn Monroe.”

It may appear that everything is OK as she walks the red carpet, but the fact is that the gown did not fit her properly at the second fitting.

“I always thought she was extremely curvy. I imagined I might be smaller in some places where she was bigger and bigger in places where she was smaller. So when it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be altered at all,” she stated.

In order to wear the classic outfit worn by Monroe several decades ago, the American socialite said she shed 16 pounds in three weeks and dyed her hair blonde for “14 hours straight” in preparation for the star-studded event, “It was this or nothing.”

“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein. I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict,” she continued. “I wanted to cry tears of joy when it went up.”

“It was such a challenge,” the reality star added to the publication. “It was like a role. I was determined to fit this. I haven’t had carbs or sugar in about three weeks. We’re having pizza and donut party back at the hotel.”

The dress has been on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum in Orlando, Fla., since it was purchased for $4.81 million in 2016, making it one of the most expensive gowns ever sold, according to Variety. After climbing the stairs, Kim then switched into a replica of the dress.
