On Friday, Johnny Depp filed a notice of appeal, just a day after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, filed an appeal with the Virginia Court of Appeals on Thursday about the defamation case ruling that she lost against her ex-husband.
According to court records acquired by Deadline, the actor is hoping to have the one count of defamation that Heard won at their public trial last month overturned and the jury’s $2 million verdict nullified.
The four-page notice of appeal obtained by the publication states: “Plaintiff and Counterclaim-Defendant John C. Depp, II, by counsel, hereby appeals to the Court of Appeals of Virginia from all adverse rulings and from the final judgment order of this Circuit Court entered on June 24, 2022.”
As we previously reported, the legal team for Heard filed the appeal notice in an attempt to overturn the June 1 ruling of the lower court, which determined that Depp had won his defamation lawsuit against the actress and had been given $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
On the other hand, the Virginia jury at that time also gave the “Aquaman” actress $2 million for succeeding on one of three claims in the countersuit she filed against her ex-spouse.
A source close to Depp told PEOPLE that the verdict was clearly in his favor, and that all he wanted was for the two of them to “move on with their lives and heal.”
However, “if Ms. Heard is determined to pursue further litigation by appealing the verdict, Mr. Depp is filing a concurrent appeal to ensure that the full record and all relevant legal issues are considered by the Court of Appeal.”
No news outlet’s request for remarks from Heard’s representative has been met with a response as of yet.
