Jesse Plemons’s Weight Loss Journey Throughout His Career

Plemons initially caught the eye of TV viewers by playing Landry Clarke in NBC’s small-town football drama “Friday Night Lights” from 2006 to 2011. During this time, he had a sporty, athletic physique.

His career took a significant turn when he snagged the important role of Todd Alquist in the fifth and final season of “Breaking Bad.” Despite playing a violent meth cook, Plemons’s youthful appearance led to him being nicknamed “Meth Damon” due to his striking resemblance to actor Matt Damon.

In 2015, the actor underwent a physical transformation for his role in the mafia drama “Black Mass,” where he gained 45 pounds to portray Kevin Weeks alongside Johnny Depp. In a 2016 interview with GQ, he expressed surprise at the numerous questions he received about his weight during the movie’s press tour.

“Everyone’s like, ‘You gained all this weight!’ I was like, ‘No, I’ve been fat for a while now,'” Plemons said. “Yeah, talking about it, if anything, makes me a little more empathetic – sympathetic? – to what women have to go through. My God! Men, in general, are just not held under the same microscope in that way. It’s bizarre that that’s all people wanted to talk about.”

Plemons maintained the weight he gained while playing Ed Blumquist in the 2015 season of FX’s “Fargo.” During this time on set, he found love with his co-star, Kirsten Dunst. The couple tied the knot in 2022 and now have two children, Ennis Howard and James Robert.

In March 2023, Plemons surprised fans by showcasing his slimmest physique at the SXSW Festival premiere of the HBO Max miniseries “Love and Death.” Even Daniel Kaluuya, his close friend and co-star in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” who had interviewed him for a profile in Interview Magazine the previous month, was surprised by the change.

Kaluuya asked Plemons what happened and how he lost weight; the latter then answered, “I don’t know, man. Something clicked in my head, and I got tired of carrying all that extra weight around.”

The actor also shared that he was asked to do a scene in “Love and Death” where he played a soldier. He thought, “I don’t know many soldiers that are my size.” So, like everyone else, he began practicing intermittent fasting and cutting carbs, among other things.

Intermittent fasting is an eating plan that alternates between periods of fasting and eating on a regular schedule. Studies indicate that intermittent fasting is an effective method for weight management and can help prevent and sometimes even reverse certain diseases.
