The separation between the two has been made public in a joint Instagram post.
After 12 years of marriage, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth have announced their separation. Reese took to Instagram on Friday to break the news to her roughly 30 million followers, describing the decision as “difficult” and saying that it had been made with “deep love, kindness, and mutual respect” for everything they had created together.
The announcement was made just two days before the pair will be celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary on March 26. After dating for around a year, Toth, who had previously worked for Creative Artists Agency, tied the knot with Witherspoon at her California ranch in 2011.
“They really are the best of friends, and this is such an amicable decision,” a source close to the couple told PEOPLE. “They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone.”
Witherspoon stressed in her statement that their top priority as they go into the next phase of their lives is their son Tennessee, who is 10 years old, as well as the rest of their family. She also asked for her family to be given privacy during this challenging time.
“We have some personal news to share… It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.
“Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time,” the statement concluded.
The announcement was also made only two days after the founder of “Hello Sunshine” celebrated her 47th birthday, during which she appeared to be as content as she always has been. In honor of the occasion, Reese published a picture of herself on social media beaming next to several bouquets of flowers while clutching her French Bulldog. She captioned: “Thank you for all my wonderful, loving, heartfelt birthday wishes. Feeling very grateful for all the LOVE in my life!”
Reese has a daughter, Ava, who is currently 23 years old, and a son, Deacon, who is 19 years old, from her previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe. In subsequent interviews, Witherspoon stated that she believes that getting married at a young age contributed to the couple’s eventual divorce in 2008.
